DIN ISO 50001 is an internationally applicable standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).  It is a systematic approach and defines the requirements for an energy management system (EnMS).

An energy management system strives for efficient energy use as well as a continuous improvement of energy-related performance within the company.  This is achieved by the establishment, introduction and implementation of systems and processes necessary for this purpose and for their regular review.
This automatically reduces costs and resources.

Since the requirements are formulated in a broadly transferable form, an energy management system according to ISO 50001 can be implemented as an independent management system in all companies and institutions. It can also be integrated into existing management systems (ISO 9001, ISO 14001). Since DIN EN ISO 50001 is essentially based on the environmental management system standard ISO 14001, an introduction of both systems would be sensible.

The introduction is in principle voluntary, but it is a prerequisite for the partial exemption of energy-intensive companies from the EEG tax (the law for the expansion of renewable energies, in short: Renewable Energy Sources Act) and for the relief of companies in the manufacturing sector from electricity and energy tax.

The benefits of ISO 50001 for your company:

  • With a current consumption of 1 to 5 megawatt hours in the last financial year: Evidence of a test of the energy efficiency system according to the top level efficiency system regulation (SpaEfV) in the control method or proof of an energy audit according to EDL-G 16247.
  • With an electricity share of at least 14% of the gross value added and a consumption of at least 10 gigawatt hours per fiscal year.
